5G – How It Will Affect Retail Industry
The biggest ever game-changer in telecommunication will be the full commercial launch of a 5G wireless network. It brings such a gigantic transformation in lifestyle that even at the experimental stage it has initiated a plethora of conspiracies. The people at large are taking it as just another initiative of telecommunication.
This is perhaps the grave misconception about the technology launch. It is going to affect every aspect and segment of life. Whether it is production, export, logistics, commerce, retail, social media, communication, or the whole lifestyle itself.
1. Breakthrough in 5G Technology
5G technology is still in its early stages of development and deployment. According to Forbes, 2021 was a crucial year for the acceleration of 5G, following the initial network launches in 2019. There is even more news in store for us in 2022 as the 5G landscape continues to evolve.
As of June 2023, Ericsson predicts over 1 billion 5G subscriptions by the end of 2022. UScellular and Ericsson have begun 5G testing at altitude using drone technology. Vodafone confirms that 5G coverage will be available in 36 Canarian municipalities by the end of the year.
2. Estimated Coverage
5G wireless networking is mainly a tool for the connectivity of mobile phones and internet devices. It will have however a significant impact on other aspects of life too. Complex industries like e-commerce, banking, and logistics are now depending on mobile phone technology.
Research shows that within the next 5 years, 65 % of the global population will actively connect with 5G networks. The existing mobile networks will make fast upgrading. Some companies even have started trial experimentation.
3. Impact on Retail Industry
The impact of 5G on retail will be beyond imagination. Fast networking speed means fast computing. It will push the industry to introduce a more sophisticated and complex feature in delivery, trading, selling, and procurements. The price tags, product information, and shelf stocks all will be monitored and managed in a live digital environment. It will ignite a super dynamism.
A person entering a food or clothing store will immediately be recognized by the biometrics identities. The fast processors will sharply process and display the experiences of past online and on-counter buying behaviors. The store branches and even the competitors will surely be sharing the data of customers for developing customized customer profiles. It will be helpful for buyers to make smart choices as well as save the time of retailers.
Overview and Influence on Retail Industry
As of my last update in September 2021, 5G technology was already making waves in various industries, including retail. By 2023, 5G technology is likely to have further evolved and had a significant impact on retail businesses. Here are some ways in which 5G is likely to have influenced the retail industry:
Enhanced Customer Experience
5G’s higher data transfer speeds and lower latency enable retailers to provide more immersive and interactive customer experiences. Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) applications can be integrated into retail stores. The connectivity will let customers virtually try products before making a purchase, enhancing their shopping experience.
Faster Transactions
With 5G, payment processing and checkout procedures will become much faster, reducing waiting times for customers. This seamless and efficient payment process can lead to increased customer satisfaction and higher conversion rates for retailers.
Improved Inventory Management
Retailers can utilize 5G-enabled sensors and IoT devices to monitor inventory in real-time. This ensures better accuracy in stock levels and automated inventory replenishment, reducing instances of stockouts and overstocking.
Personalized Marketing
5G technology allows for the collection and analysis of vast amounts of data at faster speeds, enabling retailers to create more accurate customer profiles. With this information, retailers can deliver personalized marketing campaigns and targeted offers, increasing the likelihood of converting leads into sales.
Supply Chain Optimization
5G facilitates the implementation of advanced logistics and tracking systems, enhancing supply chain visibility. Retailers can monitor the movement of goods throughout the supply chain, ensuring efficient transportation and delivery of products to stores and customers.
Smart Retail Stores
5G enables the deployment of smart devices and sensors throughout stores, creating a connected retail environment. These devices can gather data on customer behavior, foot traffic, and product interactions, allowing retailers to optimize store layouts and improve the overall shopping experience.
Remote Workforce Support
5G’s high-speed connectivity can help retailers support remote workers, enabling real-time communication and collaboration. This can be particularly beneficial for field sales representatives, inventory management, and customer support teams.
Edge Computing for Real-Time Analytics
5G’s ability to connect to edge computing resources allows retailers to perform data processing and analysis closer to the source of data. This enables real-time analytics, which can be used to respond quickly to changing customer preferences and market trends.
4. The Way It Will Work
The smooth functioning of digital tagging and the smart customized display is dependent upon the computing & communication speeds. The processors are already advancing through the 8th generation of i7. The 5G communication will be the fit answer to it. The innovation is going to facilitate both consumers and retailers.
The intelligently processed data will flow fast to mobile phones, tablets, and digital screens installed at retail outlets. The customers thus make the smart selection of desired products. It will be a unique experience and a plus to present online shopping where a buyer is only making a selection based on still product images.
5. Smart Digitalization of Inventory
The retail industry will surely have many more added advantages in exploring the possibilities offered by the 5 G-connected stores. The shelves will be fitted with sensors to keep a live record of products by digital tagging. Suppose a customer enters a store asking for a 24” collar shirt and there is none on the shelf.
The sensors will immediately surf the back-end storage and display the availability here in the store and the other store outlets even the other participating outlets. The customer then makes the purchase and the product will be delivered at home even before the customer reaches back home. The same smart sensors will issue alerts on inventory reaching the minimum level fed in the system.
6. Wireless Logistics Connectivity
Similarly, the 5G will be supportive for manufacturers to respond to alerts from the wholesalers. The alerts issued by the retail shelves will be compiled by the system to issue the demands to manufacturers/suppliers who in turn will make supply arrangements by the automated logistic arrangements.
The robots will be working to smartly recognize the specific orders to compile and load the trucks and containers with the stuff to be delivered on particular routes. The drivers then will be guided by smart navigation to check for the smallest easy delivery routes to avoid traffic congestion. The same will truly apply to the export industry where loading and transportation to port and lining up with vessels will be a matter of a few clicks.
7. Smart Counter
All this connectivity revolution will make it possible for the stores to install digitally smart counters sensing the customer queues, taking the information from the shelf sensors, and matching it with the robot-sorted trolly load on the counter. The prices of the purchases will appear on the counter screen asking customers to swap the card or just push a button to make a payment command from already saved card details.
These counters do even not be needing tellers to deal with long customer queues. All it seems is a scene from a future science fiction film which is not true. The hard reality is fast taking shape and knocking to change the whole user experience even the lifestyle itself. Get ready for the future, the future is here.
Summary
Overall, 5G technology has the potential to transform retail businesses by enhancing customer experiences, optimizing operations, and enabling innovative technologies that drive growth and competitiveness in the industry. However, it’s essential to note that the extent of the impact may vary depending on the adoption rate of 5G infrastructure and the retail sector’s ability to leverage these new capabilities effectively.
